According to the TTLB Ecosystem, blogoSFERICS at this URL is a slithering reptile. After years and years as a large mammal but never breaking into the playful primates, any change of scenery is good. The redirect page (“blogoSFERICS Has Moved”) at the old URL, which brings visitors here who haven’t yet updated their blogrolls or bookmarks, is at #111 in the Ecosystem—a large mammal on the verge of becoming a playful primate. And that’s after it apparently came within maybe five or six of cracking that barrier yesterday. Well, it’s like I said when I announced this URL change, if I were a traffic whore I never woulda done it. UPDATE: On the bright side, the redirect page and the blog are at parity in terms of actual traffic (below the fold, second screenshot), as opposed to links—both getting 374 visits a day according to NZ Bear’s tracker. » Read more "Perfect Timing"

Endangered Species Act Eyed for Change Fox News LOS ANGELES — Opponents of the Endangered Species Act say the federal legislation protecting the sucker fish, the spotted owl and hundreds of other animals on the watch list has crippled industries and ravaged local economies. Now, for the first time in decades, these foes see an opportunity for change with a poll showing that up to 80 percent of the public would be willing to consider changes to the landmark environmental law. “What we are trying to do is change the act so it doesn’t have the conflicts with private property owners and at the same time does a better job at recovering species than we are currently doing,” said Rep. Richard Pombo, R-Calif. The political fight is well under way, with conservatives lobbying the Western Governor’s Association for support. » Read the rest. The fallacy of the Endangered Species Act has been illustrated in recent years with logging ended to protect an owl that nests in a department store sign, and federal employees planting false evidence to cause areas to be designated key habitat for an endangered animal that lives nowhere near the place. If the Act has ever played a positive role in heading off an extinction (other than of jobs), I’m unaware of it.

I would perhaps add only that anyone who blames others (e.g., “da Jooz”) for the death of Christ, rather than taking the responsibility upon himself as a sinner, thus declares himself not a Christian, for so failing to appreciate the gift of the Redemption that he refuses to accept it. But that’s just corollary.

Wizbang readers are sounding off about Jay Tea’s adventure with an in-law’s spyware riddled computer. Endorsements of Firefox, Unix, and even the Mac are flying fast and furious (note: I use Firefox, but not because of any alleged anti-spyware advantages—this is the first I’ve heard of them), but I have a simpler suggestion. I’ll also take the opportunity of this post to announce that the two-tiered blogroll is history; all blogs that had been divided among the two ‘rolls are now consolidated onto one. However, to alleviate my tendency toward information overload, it’s only displaying the 25 most recently updated blogs. Some of y’all who don’t seem to ping the update-notification servers may find you’re not appearing. There’s something you can do about that…

Abbas Calls for No Arms Against Israel Paul Martin, The Washington Times LONDON — Mahmoud Abbas, the prohibitive favorite to succeed Yasser Arafat as president of the Palestinian Authority, called yesterday for an end to the use of deadly weapons against Israel so as to create a suitable climate for negotiations. Mr. Abbas had previously said the use of arms against Israelis had hurt Palestinian interests — a remark he repeated yesterday — but had not so explicitly demanded an end to their use. It was not immediately clear how the comment in an interview with a London-based Arabic newspaper would affect his campaign for the Palestinians’ Jan. 9 presidential election, but it was liable to anger militants. » Read the rest. The “prohibitive favorite”? Maybe yesterday. Today I think he may be a dead man campaigning. It would be terrific for the prospects of peace in Israel if the Palestinians elected a leader who actually wants peace. But let’s be real here.

White Christmas? Snow May Arrive Early Next Week Mike Morris, AJC Okay, so you’ve been dreaming of a white Christmas. Would you settle for a white beginning to the holiday week? The National Weather Service is predicting a chance of flurries across metro Atlanta early next week, and in the North Georgia mountains, the snow could begin as soon as Saturday. The weekend forecast for metro Atlanta calls for partly cloudy skies on Saturday and a 20 percent chance for rain showers on Sunday, with highs in the upper 40s and lows in the low 30s. After that, things get interesting. » Read the rest. I learned to be cynical about forecasts of snow while growing up in Sacramento. Even in Fairbanks it wasn’t unheard of for a forecast of snow to be a bust (though on our visit last September the errors tended to be a question of “when” and “how much” more than “if”). And while it’s true that it snows more often here than in Sacramento (I resisted the temptation to jump below the fold immediately after “more often here than”), we most certainly do not get snow every winter. Anyway, the forecast being discussed here is for flurries—which means no accumulation. This is not to say the stores won’t be packed with people buying a year’s supply of milk…

Poll Shows GOP on the Move: More Ink to Follow? Editor & Publisher NEW YORK A new Gallup poll shows that the public values “values” less than November exit polls suggested, but another survey from the same outfit released today shows a historic surge in Republican party affiliation. In Gallup’s latest poll this month, those identifying themselves as Republicans jumped to 37% of the public, with Democrats now clearly trailing with 32%. Democrats have long held more party members than Republicans. During the Clinton years, the bulge was about 5% to 6%. As recently as late-October of this year the Democratic edge was 37% to 34%. Gallup noted today: “Post-election shifts in partisanship after presidential elections or midterm congressional elections are not routine, but are also not uncommon.” Another Gallup poll also released today showed that, contrary to many press reports, “values” ranked well behind the war in Iraq, terrorism and the economy as a prime concern of Americans. Only an idiot or a member of the lamestream media (but I repeat myself) would be surprised by this.

Hello. So you found us again. Next time I’ll pick a better hiding place. Since the smooth way of doing this didn’t seem to be working, I just up and renamed the directory from “blogoSFERICS” to “weblog,“ and reset the subdomain redirect to point here. And that redirect page you found in the replacement “blogoSFERICS/index.php” directory is there to help you find your way here. If you saw it, it did its job. Still an occasional housekeeping chore to be done (redoing the 404 page, for example), but this part of the job is done. Pretty much all the oustanding links are now dead, I’m afraid. If you have any that are just absolutely essential, changing one segment of the URL—“blogoSFERICS” to “weblog”—should fix it. If I were a traffic whore I never would have done this. Anyway, once again I ask you to update your blogrolls and/or bookmarks. The preferred URL is weblog.mcgeheezone.com, but mcgeheezone.com/weblog will work too. UPDATE: Oh, and if you’re taking content off an RSS feed, we’ll need to make an adjustment there, won’t we? I’m checking out something different as an alternative to all that @#$! in the “Never Mind” post. If you’re seeing this message at the usual (officially incorrect) URL, it probably means it didn’t work and I’ll have to think of something else. UPDATE: I’ll have to think of something else. ‘NOTHER UPDATE: Freaky. I’ve copied my EE files and all into a different directory. Everything works over here, but I’m not getting an actual blog. If this edit from the other installation actually changes this entry in the original weblog, that will be quite a surprise. ‘NOTHER OTHER UPDATE: Dang. It worked. Now if I can just figure out how to make this installation work over here in the new directory…
