Am I the only person who, when trying to read an argument in favor of same-sex marriage, stops reading at the first instance of the word “bigot” or its derivatives?
It’s becoming more and more of a timesaver lately.
Comments:
Nah, you aren’t alone ... I stop reading most articles at about the word “bigot” ... heh

I’m thinking of introducing a variant of Godwin’s Law to conversations (as soon as I can think of a clever name for it) in which the first person who mentions comparisons to racism or the Civil Rights struggle automatically loses.

I think there are some legitimate reasons for comparing racism to homophobia. Because people are unwilling to step beyond preconcieved notions of racial identity, they are unwilling to accept other races as equal to their own. Because people are unwilling to step beyond preconcieved notions of sexuality, they are unwilling to accept other sexual identities as eqaul to their own.
Consider this definition of the word bigot from Webster’s 1913 Dictionary:
A person who regards his own faith and views in matters of religion as unquestionably right, and any belief or opinion opposed to or differing from them as unreasonable or wicked.

CG, when your argument consists chiefly of calling your opponents names, you’re essentially admitting you don’t have an argument.
Try presenting the basis for your position without using the word “bigot.“ I’m betting you can’t.

Heh. I almost responded to CG, but I quit reading when I got to the word “bigot.“

I love it when more comments come while I’m typing, rendering my response redundant.

ROFLMAO!

I have yet to hear an argument for same sex “marriage” that is convincing. Whether the word bigot is used or not, I don’t think I’ll ever be convinced. However, the use of the word bigot is especially ironic if they are using it to describe an opponent to gay marriage who happens to be gay.

Well, in that instance I’m sure they use it to mean “self-loathing.“ If there’s anything the radical activists loathe it’s a gay person who loathes himself.
And of course by “self-loathing” they mean “traitor to his/her/its/their sexual orientation.“

Heck, I’ll respond to CG:
See, the problem with comparing SSM to the treatment of blacks and other racial minorities is that discrimination against racial minorities stems from the fact that, no matter what their behavior is, they are judged by their appearance (which they cannot control). Homosexuals, on the other hand, are experiencing “discrimination” because, regardless of their appearance, they are engaging in a voluntary behavior.
Homosexuals may hate having to be in the closet, but at least they had a closet to hide in. If they don’t want to be “discriminated” against, they just hide the behavior.
Blacks didn’t have that choice. There was no way to hide their skin color and features. Even if they tried to act like the group in power, they were still denied the right to work, vote, and live.
I didn’t notice anyone preventing homosexuals from working or voting. Nor do I think it is a bigot to identify behavior that is harmful to an individual and to society. Homosexuality is clearly one such behavior.

Well… reading CG’s quoting of the definition of the B-word, I have to say that certain pro-Gay Marriage activists certainly ARE b-words.
“A person who regards his own faith and views in matters of religion as unquestionably right, and any belief or opinion opposed to or differing from them as unreasonable or wicked.“
Sounds like Sullivan on a rant against so-called ‘theocrats’ to me.
