Newt Gingrich was an effective opposition leader before 1994, and a fair Speaker after (though he suffered a lust for MSM approval that ultimately brought him down). I have never really thought of him as presidential material.
Newt Gingrich is moving closer to a presidential nomination bid in a severely divided Republican Party.
“I will decide based on whether I have about $30 million in committed campaign contributions and whether I think it is possible to run a campaign based on ideas rather than 30-second sound bites,“ the former House speaker told The Washington Times yesterday.
Many Republicans, regardless of whether they agree with his views, regard him as conservatism’s brainiest and most-engaging politician.» Gingrich hints of White House bid
Unfortunately for Newt, the presidency doesn’t place as much of a premium on brainpower—nor even on being “engaging.“ What counts is executive ability, which Gingrich has never had occasion to demonstrate. At least Quayle, for his four years as vice-president, has that line item in his resume.
